When we speak about domestic violence and sexual assault, the truth of the matter is… it does not care if you are black or white, rich or poor, young or old.

When domestic violence and sexual assault rears its ugly head it does not discriminate.

Every person that has experienced domestic violence or sexual assault is a mother/father, sister/ brother, neighbor, or co-worker. These people are in every area of our everyday lives.

We serve 11 counties including Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey, Gibson, Dubois, Spencer, Perry, Crawford, Orange, Pike, and Harrison.

All of our services are confidential and free of charge.

Albion Fellows Bacon Center is here to help!

Health Care and Domestic Violence

Did you know?
• The cost of intimate partner violence exceeds $5.8 billion each year, $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services.
• Each year, about 324,000 pregnant women in this country are battered by their intimate partners. Few physicians screen pregnant patients for abuse.
• Fifty percent of men who frequently assault their wives frequently assault their children.

Information taken from the Family violence Prevention Fund
http://www.endabuse.org/resources/facts/HealthCare.pdf

• Victims of intimate partner violence lost almost 8 million days of paid work
• 70-81% of survivors of abuse reported that they wanted their healthcare provider to privately ask them about domestic abuse during their appointments.
• Emerging research indicates that hospital-based domestic violence intervention will reduce health care cost by at least 20%.

***What can health providers do?***

-host a training on domestic violence-all nurses, doctors, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, clinics, etc. should attend.
-routinely screen for domestic violence (when alone with patient)
-have pamphlets or information cards inside patient rooms
-call a domestic violence shelter to find out what else you can do.
