Domestic violence and sexual assault are two of the most common crimes.

  • An estimated two to four million American women are abused each year by their partners.
  • Thirty to forty percent of teenagers have experienced physical violence in their dating relationships.
  • One in three females and one in six males will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
  • Twenty-one percent of all women who need hospital emergency surgical services were battered.
  • In one-half of spouse-abusing families, the children are battered as well.

These statistics point to an urgent need to educate community members about these topics. Albion Center staff can speak to your community, church or school group and to law enforcement, clergy and medical personnel about domestic violence and sexual assault. Audience members will learn facts that will help them reduce their risk of being victimized and enable them to empathize with and support friends, co-workers or family members who have been touched by these issues.

Albion’s community education programs, like all of our services are free. The presentations and workshops can be altered (in subject matter, length and material used) to meet the needs of your organization or classroom.

Adult Presentations

Overview of Domestic Violence

Basic information about Albion’s services, the dynamics of domestic violence, victims’ options and how an individual can help a person who is being abused.

Children of Domestic Violence

This presentation identifies children living in violent homes and shows the behavioral and physical problems these children exhibit. The presentation is very beneficial for teachers, counselors and professionals who work with children. It can also be geared toward high school or college classes studying children’s issues.

Medical Personnel/Health Care Response to Domestic Violence

Health care providers will learn how to ask patients about suspected domestic violence and how to respond if a patient is being abused. This workshop is highly recommended for emergency room and hospital staff, private practitioners and other health care providers.

Domestic Violence Training for Law Enforcement

(Course #1623 for law enforcement personnel)

The training includes information about how abusive relationships begin and are sustained and is designed to increase officers’ knowledge about the dynamics of violent relationships and the characteristics of victims and their abusers. Through discussion, information about how an officer can work more effectively with victims, network with service providers and better serve victims will be shared. Albion Fellows Bacon Center staff members are certified as training instructors by the Law Enforcement Training Board through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Rape Dynamics

This educational presentation defines rape and sexual assault on college campuses and discusses responsible dating. Societal myths about sexual assault are explored, the impact of rape on the victim and his or her medical and legal options are discussed. Included in the presentation is a discussion of prevention steps for males and females, along with issues of consent and how to help friends who are raped.

Victim Impact: Understanding Victims of Sexual Assault
(Course #229 for law enforcement personnel)

The subject matter discussed in this workshop includes the different types of sexual victimization, emotional reactions of victims, stages of recovery and the role victims play in an investigation. This presentation can be adapted to meet the needs of the audience.

Medical Response to Rape

This educational program informs health care professionals or medical students about the prevalence of rape and sexually abused victims that are seen in emergency rooms, family health care, gynecology offices, student health centers, etc. Discussion includes the impact of the rape evidence collection exam and post traumatic stress on victims through a broad range of emotional and physical concerns they may present. Health care providers will be given questions and possible responses to help address the patient’s concerns after a rape.

School or community Teen/Tween Presentations

ABC’s of Relationships

The ABC’s of Relationships addresses all types of relationships for adolescents. This presentation explains what a healthy relationship and unhealthy relationship is and puts a focus on the importance of self-love. Scenarios are used with this presentation to further discuss what to do if faced with an unhealthy situations that adolescents may come in contact with.
Suggested for grades: 4th-6th

Healthy Relationships

This educational presentation introduces the characteristics of healthy relationships. Participants will focus on techniques to ensure effective communication and conflict resolution. Participants will be briefed on the consequences of choosing unhealthy partners. Dating “red flags and green flags” will be discussed to help students seek and identify healthy relationships and avoid abusive ones.
Suggested for grades: 4th-6th or 7th-8th

Teen Talk

This interactive presentation allows students to discuss their thoughts on dating issues concerning emotional and physical abuse. Information about what dating violence is, the red flags of a relationship, the cycle of violence and technology concerns are presented. A true/false game is utilized.

Dating Violence Presentation

This presentation addresses the issue of domestic violence in teen dating relationships. Discussion will include characteristics of an abusive dating relationship, why someone would stay with an abusive partner and what students can do to help a friend or themselves if they are involved in a potentially violent relationship.
Appropriate grades: 8th-12th

Dating Issues-Dating Violence and Sexual Assault

Both the dynamics of teen dating violence and sexual assault are highlighted in this educational program. Information will be given to assist students in preparing for safe and healthy relationships. The importance of knowing one’s physical and emotional boundaries, communicating effectively, and identifying disrespectful behavior is stressed to assist teens in avoiding relationships. This presentation is a simple and shorter version of both dating and sexual violence.
Appropriate grades: 7th-12th

Technology Safety

This presentation gives a general overview of cyber bullying, social networking, cell phone issues, twitter, and sexting. The presentation strives to raise students* awareness of what these issues are and how they can be harmful. It also equips students with the skills and resources to treat each other respectfully when using technology. We will give students information about how to get help if they or others they know are being abused by technology. We can present these topics individually or together in one presentation. Program is updated as technology safety issues change.

Laws, facts and forms of sexual harassment and sexual assault are discussed, along with appropriate action to be taken by the victim and preventive steps. This presentation can be adapted to meet the needs of a specific type of class.

Date Rape Drugs

This educational presentation informs students about the most commonly used date rape drugs and their effects on the body. Information will also be given about how to stay safe and avoid drug-facilitated rape. We will also discuss common signs and symptoms of someone who has been drugged, as well as alcohol induced sexual assaults. This presentation can provide tips for parents or concerned citizens as well.
Suggested for grades: 7th-12th or college level
