If you are a victim of sexual assault:

  • Try to remain calm. Decide whether or not it is best to run, scream, fight back, talk to the attacker or submit.
  • Try to get a good look at the attacker, noting:
    • Height
    • Weight
    • Hair color
    • Eye color
    • Scars
    • Language
    • Vehicle’s make, model and color
    • Where the attacker came from and went
  • Try to leave evidence that you were at the scene.
  • Don’t douche, bathe, brush your teeth or change clothes until you get medical attention. This is your chance to gather the most physical evidence, whether you decide to prosecute now or later. You will need to be assessed for possible physical injury, and tested for diseases and pregnancy.
  • Seek medical attention at a hospital emergency room, your private physician, the Health Department or Planned Parenthood.
  • Call the Sexual Assault Crisis Line (812) 424-RAPE. A crisis counselor or volunteer will discuss your legal and medical options and other support services.
  • Seriously consider reporting the crime. That may prevent the rapist from attacking someone else. The sooner you report the assault, the better the chances of catching the attacker. You may report without giving your name. Reporting the crime does NOT mean that you must press charges or go to court.
  • You have several legal options, including the right to:
    • Report the crime.
    • File charges.
    • Do nothing. If a police officer appears at the hospital, it is your right to decide whether or not to talk to the officer.
    • Assistance is available through Albion Fellows Bacon Center’s Legal Advocacy [LINK] program.
    • Services are also available to friends and family of the victim. Ask your county prosecutor or call Albion Fellows Bacon Center.
