At home:

  • Lights at all entrances; strong locks on doors and windows
  • Be aware of places where someone might hide from you.
  • Last name only on mailbox; last name and initials in phone book
  • Know who’s at the door before opening it.
  • Leave a radio or TV on if you’re alone, so it sounds like someone is with you.

On the street or campus:

  • Wear shoes and clothes that will allow you to run if you have to.
  • Keep your hands as free as possible. Don’t overload yourself with purse or packages.
  • Avoid dark parking lots and other places people might hide.
  • Be aware of people and events around you. Walk briskly with a sense of purpose.
  • Carry a whistle on your key chain or around your wrist and use it.
  • Stay close to the street and the street lights when walking.

Transportation:

  • Always lock your car and look in the back seat before getting in.
  • Keep your doors locked and windows closed while driving.
  • If your car breaks down, raise the hood, lock yourself in, and wait for the police.
  • Do not walk away from your stalled car or take rides from strangers.
  • Don’t hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers!
  • If someone is following you, drive to the police station or a public location. Do not drive home.
  • On public transportation, sit near the driver. Look aware and don’t fall asleep.

Dating:

  • Go only where you want to go and with whom you want.
  • Listen to your gut reaction about social situations.
  • Assert yourself and stick with it.
  • If you drink, stay in control.
  • If you are unsure of a new acquaintance, go on a group or double date.
  • On your dates, be aware and independent.
  • You do not owe your date anything.
